What it is
Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh of usable energy, enough to carry a typical Melbourne household through the evening peak and much of the night. Unlike earlier models it has a solar inverter built in, so a new solar and battery system needs one unit on the wall instead of two.
Backup power
With Tesla’s backup hardware installed, Powerwall 3 detects a grid outage and switches your home over almost instantly. You can back up the whole home or just the essential circuits, depending on your switchboard and what you want to keep running.
Room to grow
Tesla offers expansion units for Powerwall 3, so a household that later buys an EV or electrifies its heating can add storage without starting again.
The Tesla app
The app shows solar, battery, home and grid flows in real time. You can set the battery to maximise your own solar use, work around a time-of-use tariff, or hold a reserve for outages.
Who it suits
- Larger homes with high evening use.
- New solar and battery systems, thanks to the built-in inverter.
- Homes that want whole-home backup.
