The brief
A family of five in a two-storey Brighton home, with cooking, laundry, heating and devices all landing after 5pm. With no solar, they were paying full price for nearly all of their power. They wanted lower bills and a system they would not have to think about.
What we did
We downloaded twelve months of half-hourly smart meter data from their distributor to see exactly when they use power. Most of it fell between 5pm and 11pm, which made a battery worth including from day one.
A neighbour’s tree shades the western roof late in the afternoon, so we put most of the 24 panels on the north and east faces and wired the western panels separately, so shade on one face does not drag down the rest.
The 13.5 kWh battery went in the garage, out of direct sun, with backup wired to the kitchen, lights, fridge and internet. The installation took one day, and we handled the grid approval, the electrical safety certificate and the rebate paperwork.
The result
From spring to autumn the battery fills on most days and carries the house through the evening peak. In winter it still moves a useful share of each day’s solar into the evening.
