The brief
The owners of a renovated Coburg weatherboard already had solar, but most of its daytime output was going to the grid for a few cents. They had just bought an EV, one of them works from home, and the car sits in the driveway most weekdays. They wanted to charge from their own roof instead of a power point overnight.
What we did
The switchboard still had old ceramic fuses, so we replaced it with a new board with circuit breakers and RCD protection on every circuit. We then ran a dedicated circuit to a 7 kW wall charger beside the driveway.
The charger is set to solar-surplus mode: it watches what the house is exporting and puts that into the car instead, pausing when clouds roll in. A boost timer tops the car up from off-peak power overnight when it needs range by morning.
The result
On sunny days the car now charges almost entirely from the roof. Before longer trips the owners switch to full-speed charging in the app.
